Friedemann Winklhofer initially studied pharmacy, later organ, piano and conducting at the Munich Music Academy. Further studies took him to Jean Guillou in Paris. In 1981 he was a prize-winner at the International Organ Competition of the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. From 1977 until 1981 Winklhofer was assistant to Karl Richter with the Munich Bach Choir. On a request of Leonard Bernstein he took part in several of Maestro Bernstein’s concerts and recordings between 1988 and 1990. Winklhofer has performed as a much sought-after continuo player and also as soloist with such illustrious conductors as Yehudi Menuhin, Georg Solti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink, Franz Welser-Most, Roger Norrington, Krzysztof Penderecki, Marcello Viotti, Kent Nagano and Zubin Mehta. Concert tours have taken him around the world, to the major musical capitals and renowned festivals (Salzburg Festival, Zurich Festival, Berlin Festival, Organ Festival Prague, Organ Festival Galicia/Spain, Melbourne Festival and others). Mr. Winklhofer is a professor at the Music Academy of Munich, also serving on the faculty at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory in Munich. He produces his own broadcasts at Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Munich). Since 1992 Winklhofer has been the organ consultant for the Archdiocese of Munich, and in 2001 he was named custodian of the big Klais-organ at the Munich Philharmonic Hall. He also serves as organist of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. |
